Leg 1 |
Our upcoming journey is less than 4 weeks away. Brian said that visiting Chang Mai & "playing" with elephants was on his bucket list. So about a year ago we began planning our adventure. There are basically 3 legs to this trip: 1) cruise from Hong Kong to Singapore 2) Exploring Malaysia and Thailand 3) cruising from Sydney to Vancouver. See the 3 maps for reference.
We will fly to San Francisco and rest up for the loong midnight flight to Hong Kong. I am not looking forward to the 15 hours in the air - ugh!
Upon arrival in Hong Kong, we will crash at a hotel for a few days before boarding the Holland America's ship, the Vollendam, on 31 January. 28 days later we will arrive in Singapore for the 2nd time on this journey and disembark.
Leg 2 |
For the next leg, I jokingly suggested taking the train from Singapore to Bangkok and B perked up like a kid in a toy store. Since we have 3 weeks to get to the elephant sanctuary, why not? We will slowly make our way through Malaysia and Thailand, staying overnight in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Bangkok. The elephant sanctuary is in Northern Thailand in Chang Mai and we will train there staying for 10 days or so.
Leg 3 |
The 3rd and final leg at the end of March, we fly to Sydney, Australia and visit with friends. In case I haven't mentioned this before, I hate long flights - ugh! So mid-April, we board the Noordam and sail to Vancouver, Canada eventually arriving home mid-May, in time for Jess' birthday...

DeleteNice blog site! I'm looking forward to following along on your adventures. :-)
ReplyDeleteBrian, It looks like an excellent trip. Are you lashing out on the Eastern & Oriental or taking a normal train? We have a story about why we DIDN'T take the E & O but it's a bit of a long story so maybe we'll tell you on the Volendam.
ReplyDeleteAs Aussies, we're well used to dealing with long, long flights. Our tactic is to have a maximum flight time of 9½ hours (which is needed to get to Hawaii) before having at least one (and preferably two) nights at a hotel. It's surprising how little extra it costs to break up a trip like that. As retirees, the extra time doesn't matter to us. Adrian
